Why I Write Erotica

When I announced to my friends that I had an erotica novel releasing some of them gave me a response that ruffled my feathers a bit. Okay, more than a bit, if I'm being honest. Which I am.

One said, "Oh well, I guess you have to make a living." And they haven't talked much to me since.

Really? Really?! The reason I chose to write erotica isn't because of the success of the latest erotica book that propelled the author into stardom. I did not leap into this with dreams of being the next 'Grey' so to speak. Ever since I hit my teen years my writing has been spicy, to put it mildly. For the books I wrote under my other name, I was forced to tone it down to keep my editor happy. Erotica came naturally to me, so naturally that I have a file of deleted scenes from many of my earlier books that never even made it to my editor.

Sex is one of the basic instincts, one we all have. Couple that with the basic need for love and companionship and you have a powerful mixture for a novel. That has always appealed to me. When I was given the chance to write freely and naturally, I jumped at it. And I couldn't be more happy that I did. It feels as though the chains have been removed. And it doesn't hurt the sex life either. ;)

How about you? If you're an author of erotica, why do you write it? If you're a reader of it, what draws you to it?

  1. I write short stories and started writing erotica in response to my mind telling me, "you have GOT to write this down" every time I had a sexual experience that was beyond the realm of the every day happening. It just seemed to me that my life was one erotic story after another and I needed to record it because it was so much better than the romance novel lovey-dovey stuff I devoured as a teenager. I started out writing as a way to preserve those erotic memories for myself.

Then I discovered sexting. I got on a website and found a sext buddy and talk about "when the student is ready, the teacher will come"---no pun intended but eventually that is indeed what happened! Lol!) The guy I met was great at innuendo and talking sex candidly and I told him I had never sexted before so he took it slow and made sure I was comfortable with everything that was going on in the scenario he was painting via text.

It didn't take long for me to get the hang of it and get over my inhibitions of talking with a "real" person. Soon the sexting moved to phone sex and after I got comfortable there I moved on to "What's your fantasy?"

This is where things really took off for me as far as writing erotica. I actually took notes on a text conversation we had and got all the details of my sext buddy's greatest fantasy. Then one night he texted and said he was horny. That was my cue!

I sexted his fantasy little by little and he got so turned on that he asked if he could leave me a voicemail of his orgasm. When he couldn't stand it anymore my phone rang and there in my voice mail I heard him get off like I'd never heard a man get off before. He said my scenario was the hottest thing he'd ever experienced.

I LOVED knowing that I did that for him. It made me feel sexy and powerful and triumphant even. Ever since then my perspective has been on who my reader is and what he/she is getting out of what I write. I write to "go there" with my readers because they want it, they crave it. I love fulfilling their desires.
